QR Code Link to This Post Super rare National archtop. Model 1185E "Club Combo" archtop. This is the later version of the Club Combo w a cutaway. According to my research (been in touch w the big National/Valco experts on this one) there were at most 10 of these produced, and I can only find pics of and reference to one other specimen of this model. Dig the space age F holes....
Fully restored by National expert and slide maestro John Mooney. Original pickups sound fantastic w that beautiful, singing old Valco sound. I believe the pots are orig as well. The switch is not, frets are definitely not (and that's a good thing, beefier frets than the ones Valco used on these type of guitars at the time), tuners prob not orig. Bridge is handcarved by Mooney.
This thing sings. The big 17" body, the gorgeous maple back and sides combined with the sweet/hot, very vocal sounding pickups makes for an incredible axe. Very similar to the Supro Coronados of the period, but much rarer, as well as much livelier sounding than the 59 Coronado I owned.
